A couple of important rules: All stakeholders in the project, eg research scientists, design engineers, CAD designers, industrial designers, technicians, production engineers etc, should be co-located. This means close enough together so that they talk to each other regularly. This is commonly called a cell-group by major manufacturers where they relocate the relevant personnel from the Manufacturing Department, CAD office, Purchasing, Research lab, etc to from their cosy environment and put them all in a room or “cell” together (bars on windows not required hopefully).
A recent study concluded that all personnel on a project should be located within 10 metres of each other. Any more than that and communication drops off rapidly. Even in this day and age of lightning fast communications the best communication happens at the coffee machine!
